Britanis Cruise Ship Sinking
Sunk - 1970 to 1995.
Britanis cruise ship sinking. The ship is the former SS. Interesting website here. I travelled on this ship in the Summer of 1987 for my senior cruise.
On 13 January 2012 the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground capsized and later sank in shallow waters after striking an underwater rock off Isola del Giglio Tuscany resulting in 32 deaths. After a major fire in July 1973 she was declared a total loss and was scrapped in Japan in January 1974. The ship remained in service until late 1994 when she was laid up.
Belofin-1 began taking on water and listing during the voyage but nobody was on board to correct the list. The tugboat crew cut her free and Belofin-1 capsized and sank due to progressive flooding some fifty miles off Cape Town South Africa on 21 October 2000. SS Monterey was also launched in January 1931 but was renamed Matsonia in May 1957 then in 1963 renamed Lurline.
Britanis sinks before being scrapped Oct 23 2000 NEW YORK -- One of the oldest existing passenger ships 26000-ton Britanis sank 50 miles off the coast of Cape Town South Africa on Oct. In this role she served well into the 1990s before finally sinking en-route to the scrapyard in 2000. The aged liner left Salvador Brazil earlier last week under a tugboats tow and was headed for a scrap yard in India when it developed a leak in the aft section.
Its the best place to find information about a specific cruise ship your favorite cruise lines fleet or even what happened to your favorite cruise ship from the past. In 1963 she was renamed again as the Lurline when the previous ship of this name became the Ellinis. Sold to the Greek Chandris Line in 1970 she was renamed Britanis and commenced round the world cruises.
Lurline which sinking event we followed under another thread. Scrapping finished in July 2017. Eventually sinking on the way to being scrapped in India in 2000 the Britanis also saw barracks duty at Guantanamo Bay Cuba.
