1990s cruise ships. From 2015 until today the average gross tonnage of a new cruise ship from the major cruise lines is 164000 gross tons more than twice the size of a ship built during the 1990s. Norwegian Cruise Lines Norway undergoes a 40 million expansion that adds two upper decks to her superstructure which equates to more than 100 more cabins and suites with verandas. That includes the Symphony of the Seas which comes in at a staggering 228081 gross tons.
The global cruise market has witnessed continuous growth throughout the last three decades a growth that was interrupted in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. All eight vessels of the class were constructed by Kvaerner Masa-Yards in Helsinki Finland at the Hietalahti shipyard. Originally debuting in 1990 Karnika has operated for numerous cruise lines throughout her history.
Today the oldest ships still happily sailing in the Carnival fleet are the Fantasy -class vessels eight sister ships that were built for the line from 1990-1998. Royal Caribbean acquired Viking Serenade from Royal Admiral Cruises. South America 19 percent.
